{"id":1200,"date":"2018-12-31T14:50:59","date_gmt":"2018-12-31T22:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stevenshomestead.com\/?p=1200"},"modified":"2018-12-31T14:50:59","modified_gmt":"2018-12-31T22:50:59","slug":"corraling-and-nail-trimming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevenshomestead.com\/?p=1200","title":{"rendered":"Corraling and nail trimming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About six weeks ago (very delayed posting!), I noticed that Zoe, one of our white alpacas, had a chunk of her toe nail hanging off.\u00a0 \u00a0I was so worried&#8230; we&#8217;ve had them since July and I&#8217;ve seen them every day, and they look for me and I know they love me&#8230;. (confession time)&#8230; I haven&#8217;t handled them at all.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t tried to corral them, or put a halter on.\u00a0 I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0970991606\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=stevenshomest-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0970991606&amp;linkId=9a94c15af590638698988de980b0bbaa\">this book<\/a>\u00a0and I&#8217;ve read it cover to cover and have referred to it a bunch of times, but I hadn&#8217;t tried the handling stuff with the girls yet.<\/p>\n<p>I was thinking that I wanted them to get comfortable and feel safe around me and I kept thinking that the handling would come more naturally, like they&#8217;d just come up to me and put their heads into halters and say, &#8220;let&#8217;s go for a walk, Mom&#8221;&#8230; that didn&#8217;t happen.\u00a0 Such a shock!<\/p>\n<p>Well, now there was something wrong, and we needed to get a better look at it, and oh yeah, we were past due on trimming their nails, because white alpacas&#8217; nails grow very quickly, and we should do it every twelve weeks and it was November and it&#8217;d been since May&#8230; <em>ohhhhh noooo, now I&#8217;m the worst.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a neglectful alpaca owner&#8230;\u00a0 \ud83d\ude41<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1182 alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/stevenshomestead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181110_1516004059291677714561187.jpg\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here we go, Girls&#8230; I forgot everything I learned in the book.\u00a0 You&#8217;re supposed to get them to a smaller section of the field and make it smaller and smaller and make yourself bigger and bigger to close off the space as you corner them. (Not a good description, but hopefully you can picture it). Also, having two more more people helps, too, because one can grab and one can block&#8230; it&#8217;s hard to do both.\u00a0 \u00a0Here, they have the whole field, which makes everything harder.\u00a0 \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1196 alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/stevenshomestead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181111_1212462455030109064070944.jpg\" width=\"3000\" height=\"1688\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1197 alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/stevenshomestead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181111_1212524461130875060703.jpg\" width=\"3000\" height=\"1688\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Eventually, I got Carson involved, and we got them trapped in the upper 1\/4 of the field using that orange mesh construction netting and some sticks.\u00a0 \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1198 alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/stevenshomestead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181111_1256436926339235146121119.jpg\" width=\"3000\" height=\"1688\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1199 alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/stevenshomestead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181111_12564701405093491657501934.jpg\" width=\"3000\" height=\"1688\" \/>Annnnd, I called our friend, Shirley.\u00a0 We got our alpacas from her and she&#8217;s been such an amazing mentor and resource.\u00a0 She came over with her nail trimmers and skill and experience, and Carson, Shirley and I got them cornered.\u00a0 We checked Zoe&#8217;s nail, and turns out she was fine&#8230; the piece I was worried about fell off on its own in all that running and trying to get away from me.\u00a0 Phew.\u00a0 And we got their nails trimmed.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t pretty or easy (that&#8217;s why I have no pictures of the process), but we got it done.<\/p>\n<p>The most submissive and docile alpaca, Phoebe, threw the biggest fit&#8230; even jumping up on two legs.\u00a0 Carson is a big strong man and she gave him a run for his money.\u00a0 She was foaming at the mouth and fighting us so hard.\u00a0 Looking back, we think maybe the halter I have for her wasn&#8217;t big enough and she was fighting because of that.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure.\u00a0 I hope it&#8217;s not that hard every time.<\/p>\n<p>The one we thought for sure would spit, Midori, didn&#8217;t.\u00a0 She was pretty easy.\u00a0 We started with her because she&#8217;s small&#8230; and she just went with it.\u00a0 Phew!<\/p>\n<p>And Zoe, wasn&#8217;t a big problem at all&#8230; She went with it more peacefully than expected.<\/p>\n<p>They are eating grain out of my hand &#8211;
